Marienwerder

During the plebiscite period, 64 towns ran post offices in the Marienwerder area (some with "a" and "b" counters etc). Collectors at the time arranged to have sets of stamps cancelled to order at their local post office. Today this habit is somewhat frowned upon, but it has left a legacy of used stamps with easily readable, centrally placed ("socked on the nose") cancels. Thus it is possible to build up a collection of the different post offices of Marienwerder on loose stamps (although much harder to find the full range on cover).

Six different types of cds (as illus) were used and the type is indicated in parentheses in the list which follows :
